Larrakh waited nervously in the corner of a dark room. In front of him a young woman was tending to three enormous creatures, shaped like gigantic armadillos. They were at at least as big as a horse, but far more bulky, and covered in plates of thick armor. The woman was feeding the large chunks of meat.
“Yarsha,” Larrakh said, respectfully. “I appreciate your need to feed your… pets, but I do have an urgent matter to discuss with…”
“Do you know of the Bulette, Larrakh?” She interuptted. “Most people consider them monsters, you know. Mindless eating machines. But that’s not fair at all.” She said while she caressed one of them absently. It was devouring what looked to Larrakh like the hind quarter of a cow.
“I understand your love of the creatures, Yarsha. But this is important.” Larrakh remained in the corner of the room, and was very careful to speak in calm, even tones. Yarsha was known to be slow to anger, but the beasts she kept were quick to anger and attack. “I simply need to discuss the matters of Red Larch with Miraj. The Believers have failed, and our base there has been discovered.”
Yarsha turned away from the trio of Bulettes, and walked gracefully across the room to stand in front of Larrakh. She smiled, but Larrakh did not take it as a graceful gesture. She sighed, and said, “First, you lose the delegates, and now this. I fear for your future among the Black Earth, Larrakh. But perhaps Ogremoch in his merciful patience has a place for you still.”
“If I could just explain to Miraj, I think…” A little exasperation crept into his voice, in spite of his fear of the Bulettes.
“Miraj??” She laughed mockingly. “Miraj has tired of your incompetence. Marlos has chosen to deal with you personally. Perhaps he’ll fix that face of yours.” She approached him, inches away from the mask he still wore. She gently caressed the mask’s edge. “It’s a shame when we take our features for granted, don’t you think?” She laughed at her joke. Larrakh did not. “Well, if you’re going to be dour about it, you might as well just go see him now.” She brought her hands together, forming a triangle with her index fingers and thumbs. He returned the gesture. “Ogremoch’s blessings upon you.” They said in unison. She then added, “you’re going to need it.”
